The University of Minnesota women's hockey team opened their regular season this past weekend with a sweep over Colgate, and the two victories included impressive debuts for MAP North members Hannah Brandt and Milica McMillan.
In Saturday's 7-0 victory, Brandt netted the game's first three goals, and McMillan assisted on two parts of the hat-trick. From GopherSports.com:
"Freshman Hannah Brandt made a statement in her first collegiate game as she led the University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a 7-0 victory over Colgate by notching a hat trick. Following Brandt acquired her hat trick in the first two periods, the Golden Gophers surged in the third period behind a quartet of goals.
It took longer than expected for the Golden Gophers to get on the board, but just under nine minutes into the game and during the Gophers’ first power play of the game, Brandt found herself scoring her first collegiate goal.
Fellow freshman Milica McMillen would rocket a shot from just inside the blue line but have it deflected by the Colgate keeper. The save was rebound by another freshman in Maryanne Menefee, who dished the puck off to Brandt. The WCHA’s Preseason Rookie of the Year, who was standing just outside the crease by the left post, then slapped in the power play goal to give the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 lead."
On Sunday, the No. 1-ranked Gophers dominated Colgate 11-0. Brandt added another two goals and four assists, and McMillan chipped in an assists.
Congrats from the MAP staff to Hannah and Milica for the strong start to their Gophers careers!
